Geuge face installation
Here is the step-by-step installation manual tailored for your custom GAUGEM gauge face overlay kit on your Harley-Davidson touring motorcycle.
1. Disconnect Power and Remove Outer Fairing
Turn off the ignition and remove the main Maxi-Fuse (located behind the left side cover) to cut all electrical power to the motorcycle. Remove the windshield screws, take off the windshield, and remove the inner fairing mounting bolts. Carefully pull the outer fairing forward, unplug the headlight and accessory wiring harness, and set the outer fairing aside on a soft blanket. Verification: The back of the instrument cluster housing and main wiring connectors will be fully exposed behind the inner fairing.
2. Remove the Gauge Cluster Assembly
Unplug the main wiring harness connector from the back of the speedometer and tachometer cluster. Remove the mounting bracket nuts or screws securing the gauge pod to the inner fairing structure. Slide the gauge assembly completely out from the inner fairing housing. Verification: The entire gauge pod is detached from the bike and ready for bench disassembly.
3. Open the Gauge Housing and Mark Needle Positions
Place the gauge assembly face-down on a clean, soft workbench and carefully unclip or un-crimp the outer bezel ring to separate the clear lens cover. Mark Needle Zero-Rest Positions: Gently lift each needle over its stop pin and let it settle to its natural resting point. Place a strip of painter’s tape on the housing and mark the exact dead-center resting position of each needle. Pry the needles straight up using a specialized needle puller tool or two padded plastic levers. Verification: The needles pop cleanly off their delicate central shafts without bending or scratching the face.
4. Install the Custom GAUGEM Overlay
Unscrew any retaining screws or peel back the adhesive securing the old stock face plates. Align your new custom-printed polycarbonate GAUGEM overlay over the alignment pins, indicator windows, and center shaft holes. Secure the new face plate using the original fastening screws or underlying adhesive strip. Verification: The overlay sits completely flat against the housing with all digital LCD windows and warning indicator icons perfectly aligned.
5. Reinstall Needles and Seal Housing
Carefully press the gauge needles back onto their shafts, aligning them precisely with the zero-rest position marks you recorded on your painter’s tape in Step 3. Manually sweep each needle across its range of motion to ensure smooth movement with zero binding or friction against the new face. Snap or crimp the clear lens bezel back tightly onto the gauge casing to seal out moisture and dust. Verification: Needles spring back smoothly to their exact zero marks and the lens cover is sealed tightly around the perimeter.
6. Reinstall Cluster, Power Up, and Test
Bolt the gauge cluster back into the inner fairing bracket and plug the main wiring harness securely into the rear ports. Reinstall the main Maxi-Fuse to restore battery power. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position to initialize the system. Verification: Check that the gauge needles perform their startup sweep, the LED backlighting shines cleanly through your custom GAUGEM face without hot spots, and all warning indicators function properly before re-securing the outer fairing and windshield.
